This last winter brought incredible amounts of snow so we thought it would be a good idea to post an update of what it means for our guests this 4th of July in Silverton and the San Juan’s. First of all, I can pretty safely say that the fireworks are almost guaranteed and campfires will be allowed… So that’s a relief.
OnTheSnow is reporting that Silverton Mountain received 421 inches of snow this season and Silverton, the town, wasn’t too far behind. This winter brought highway closures, limited tourists, avalanches, and lots of sore lower backs from digging out. It also brought endless powder days and ample opportunities to play in the fresh snow, messing up the same fields day after day. If you’re coming up here for the 4th of July it will be a very special year.
The snow is still 4 feet deep at Mollas Lake (as of June 1st) and when it finally melts out the wildflowers will explode. Some hiking trails will likely be snowed in but the waterfalls, mushrooms, rivers, and raspberries will LOVE it and if you bring along some snow shoes you’ll open up all kinds of opportunities to venture out a bit further. Some of the higher elevation camping spots might not be as accessible but we’ll make room for everyone to help your vacation go off without a hitch.
The San Juan County Road Crews are doing amazing work to ensure that our 4×4 trails are cleared as fast as possible. As an example, a week ago it was reported that the road between Animas Forks and Eureka was cut off due to one bad avalanche zone which left 100 feet of snow over the road. And this is just one spot at a relatively low elevation, so the downside is that it’s likely some passes may not be fully open, but the upside is that you’ll be able to get those killer photos of your car parked next to a 20 foot wall of snow on either side. Ophir Pass is open as of now and Stoney is a major focus so please don’t be discouraged by the fact that some passes may not be fully open, look forward to seeing more snow than you’ve ever seen in your life… in July!
Yes, this 4th of July will be amazing! The Schedule of events is filled with family-friendly activities with a focus on showing our kids the best of America. A small town holiday paying tribute to our great nation on the grandest scale we can.
We can’t wait to see you and your Instagram posts.
